NEW DELHI, October 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations, with trade, technology, energy, security and education emerging as key areas of cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting came a day after Modi held a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, signalling renewed efforts by New Delhi and Ottawa to improve ties and advance their strategic partnership.

Following his meeting with Anand, Modi described the discussions as productive and reiterated India’s commitment to building a constructive and forward-looking relationship with Canada.

“India is committed to building a constructive and forward-looking strategic partnership with Canada that delivers tangible benefits to the people of both countries,” Modi said in a post on X.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the discussions covered a broad range of areas, including trade, science and technology, defence, security, energy, education, people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in multilateral forums. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual interest.

Modi underlined the need to maintain the momentum in bilateral engagement and translate diplomatic understanding into concrete outcomes. He stressed the importance of concluding negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at an early date.

The proposed agreement is expected to strengthen economic engagement and expand commercial opportunities between the two countries.

During his conversation with Carney on Tuesday, Modi had expressed confidence that India and Canada could work together towards a more stable and prosperous world. Both leaders agreed to build on the positive momentum in bilateral relations and pursue tangible progress in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties.

A statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office said the two leaders had reaffirmed their commitment to concluding CEPA negotiations at the earliest opportunity. The agreement is intended to support efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030.

They also welcomed the ongoing Team Canada Trade Mission to India, led by Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu, and Anand’s visit to New Delhi to advance shared priorities.

Modi also conveyed his warm greetings to Carney and expressed his desire to continue their engagement, underscoring the importance both governments are placing on strengthening cooperation and achieving practical results.
