86 Tokay Geckos seized in Assam, adding to string of wildlife trafficking cases
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 86 live Tokay Geckos in Assam’s Jorhat district, the latest in a series of seizures involving the protected reptile across the state.
The geckos were recovered on September 22 at Bandar Chalia Gaon Ground in Mariani after DRI officers acted on specific intelligence about an alleged illegal wildlife trade deal.
Two persons were intercepted during the operation and later handed over to the Mariani Range Forest Office along with the reptiles for further legal action under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the DRI said.
The Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) is protected under India’s wildlife law and is listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. It is also included in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
