Four Naga Civilians Allegedly Killed by Suspected Militants in Manipur’s Kamjong

Four Naga civilians were allegedly shot dead by suspected militants near Pilong village in Manipur’s Kamjong district, close to the Myanmar border, on September 24, according to local residents and sources.

A police team was dispatched to the remote border area after authorities received information that four people had been shot dead. However, police had not confirmed the killings by Thursday evening.

According to residents of Pilong, suspected militants from across the international border entered the area and attacked a group of five people. Four of them were allegedly killed, while the fifth person managed to escape and informed villagers and local authorities about the incident.

“Villagers claimed that four persons were killed when militants from neighbouring Myanmar crossed the border and attacked five people. One of them managed to escape and reported the incident to the villagers and local authorities,” a police officer said, adding that the allegations were yet to be verified.

Pilong village is located around 34 kilometres from the Kamjong district headquarters and lies close to the international border with Myanmar. The reported site of the incident is said to be between Border Pillars 91 and 93.

Local sources have alleged that cadres of the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) and armed Kuki groups were responsible for the attack. However, the allegation had not been independently verified at the time of reporting.

The deceased were identified as Phami Jajo, Betterson Jajo and Vareishim Jajo, all residents of Kangpat Khullen, and Ningthem Kashak of Zingsui village.

The reported killings have heightened tensions in the border region. Following the incident, the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) announced a total shutdown across its jurisdiction in protest against the alleged killings.

Authorities are expected to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident as the investigation continues.
