Dibrugarh becomes Assam’s second tea auction centre, bringing price discovery closer to Upper Assam growers
Dibrugarh has emerged as Assam’s second tea auction centre after Guwahati, with the inaugural e-auction at Assam Chai Bazaar opening a new market platform for tea producers in Upper Assam.
The launch is significant for one of the country’s largest tea-producing regions, where producers have traditionally had to depend on auction centres outside their immediate production areas, adding to transportation and handling costs and increasing the distance between the tea garden and the marketplace.
The first auction, held at H.M. Resort in Dibrugarh on Friday, saw 126 sellers and more than 50 buyers participate, with 18 buyers taking part in the inaugural sale.
The auction was conducted under the regulatory framework of the Tea Board of India. Tea Board India issued the Auction Organiser Licence to Assam Chai Bazaar on July 18, with the first auction held within about two months.
Tea Board India Executive Director, North Eastern Zonal Office, Arunita Phukan Yadav, welcomed the new centre and stressed the need for Assam Chai Bazaar to comply with Tea Board rules and directives governing tea auctions.
