GUWAHATI, Oct 8: The all-India theatrical release of director Bhargav Saikia’s Sikkim-set debut feature ‘Bokshi’, originally scheduled for October 9, has been postponed to December 4 following its clearance by the CBFC Revising Committee with an “A” certificate and minimal modifications.
‘Bokshi’, produced by Saikia and written by debutant screenwriter and executive producer Harsh Vaibhav under Lorien Motion Pictures, was referred to the Revising Committee by the CBFC’s Examining Committee for further review over its supernatural themes, depiction of witchcraft, gruesome violence and bloodshed.
The producers said the delay would allow them to account for the certification process and undertake a full-scale campaign targeting the film’s core audience. The film will release in cinemas across India on December 4.Saikia, originally from Biswanath Chariali in Assam, shot the film extensively in Sikkim. Its official trailer, released a few weeks ago, has received an encouraging response, particularly among younger audiences and communities of horror, anime and genre cinema.‘Bokshi’ blends folk horror, coming-of-age themes and mystery. It follows Anahita, a troubled teenager whose school trek to a remote prehistoric site leads to unsettling connections with an ancient legend. As myth and reality converge, she is drawn into a mystery that forces her to confront the unknown.
The film had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) in 2025 and was later screened at several international genre film festivals. It was the only Indian feature selected for the 2025 editions of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain, the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland and SXSW Sydney in Australia. The film stars Prasanna Bisht (Chiraiya, Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya), Mansi Multani (Kadakh, A Suitable Boy) and Siddharth Shaw (Do Gubbare, Chiraiya) in pivotal roles. Shernaz Patel (Black, Guzaarish) lends her voice to the titular character ‘Bokshi’.
A multilingual film in Hindi, English and Nepali, ‘Bokshi’ also features Boksirit, a fictional language created exclusively for the film by Dutch linguist Jan van Steenbergen. The film is the second Indian feature after Baahubali to feature a constructed language. In a statement, Lorien Motion Pictures said the film had been cleared with an “A” certificate with minimal modifications and that its release had been postponed to ensure a seamless theatrical rollout.“Due to its supernatural themes, depiction of witchcraft, and gruesome violence, BOKSHI was recently referred by the CBFC’s Examining Committee to the Revising Committee for further review.
We are thrilled to share that the Revising Committee has now cleared the film with an “A” certificate with minimal modifications,” the statement said. The production house said it was working to bring the film to audiences “in the best possible manner” and thanked its partners, media, content creators and audiences for their patience and support.
“This is just a brief pause. BOKSHI will now release in select cinemas on December 4!” the statement said.
