Burlington Man Charged with Second-Degree Murder After Wife Dies from Beating in Front of Children

BURLINGTON, OCT 14: A fatal domestic violence incident in Burlington, Vermont, has led to upgraded charges against 44-year-old Bal Khadka, who now faces a second-degree murder charge following the death of his wife, Lila Khadka.

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, Burlington Police responded to multiple emergency 911 calls reporting a violent assault at an apartment on South Champlain Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive 33-year-old woman suffering from severe head trauma. Investigators determined that Khadka bludgeoned his wife with a heavy flashlight. Emergency personnel from the Burlington Fire Department transported the victim to the University of Vermont Medical Center in critical condition. However, prosecutors confirmed that she later succumbed to her severe injuries.

According to police reports, three young children—including the couple’s daughters, aged 3 and 10—were present inside the apartment during the fatal attack. One of the children recorded audio of the violence, and prosecutors stated that the children described previous violent attempts by their father against their mother.

Following her death, state prosecutors upgraded Khadka’s charges from initial assault counts to second-degree murder, alongside three counts of cruelty to children. During his arraignment in Chittenden Superior Criminal Court in Burlington, Khadka pleaded not guilty to the charges. The judge ordered him held without bail at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans pending further court proceedings.
